Bricking the Streets
Bricking the Streets
The Board of Public Works has 53 employees and a large fleet of equipment dedicated to maintaining the streets, parking lots, parks, and common areas of the city. The department is tasked with maintaining the 517 streets in the city, including paving, drainage, street signage, and snow removal.

Public Works projects are self-sufficient, with all work performed in-house by department employees. Employees perform concrete construction, demolition of structures, paving (both asphalt and brick), maintenance of traffic lights and street lights, streetscape revitalization, and other maintenance and constrution tasks.

Public Works is also responsible for bi-weekly recycling pickups, the annual spring clean-up, and the fall leaf pick-up.

The department's most recent project is the 3.2 mile Rails-to-Trails project, including the construction of paved bike/pedestrian walkway, covered shelters, and street crossings.
