Fridays in the Park: Free concerts are held weekly during the summer at Word Park on Neville Street from 11:30 am until 1:00 p.m., weather permitting. The August entertainment line-up at the gazebo begins with the Saylor and Jayden Miller with Noah Lowe on August 2. Lady D will perform on August 9 and Active SWV will lead Wizards Unite (Harry Potter game). The Chris Oxley Quartet is scheduled for August 16. Then on August 23, Friday in the Park celebrates the Appalachian Festival with music by Lost Cannon Bluegrass Band and Shane Ingram and Friends. The summer music series ends with David Runion on August 30. Lunch vendors sell food items during the event.
First Friday at 5 pm on August 2 will feature Chloe Florence and Bryce Painter at Word Park from 5:00-7:00 pm.
The Monthly Group Full Moon Walk and Bicycle Ride on McManus Trail organized by Active SWV and Beckley BPAC, will meet at 3rd Ave at 8 pm on August 15.
Uptown Tailgate Farmers Market – The farmers market continues at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway Plaza located beside Neville Street. Market hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 – 5:00 pm. If you have extra produce that you would like to sell at the market, contact the WVU Extension Office at 304-255-9321 for set-up details. Most market vendors accept senior coupons.
The Raleigh County Beekeepers Association’s Honey Bee Festival will take place on August 17 at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine.
Appalachian Festival Block Party – As one of several events planned for the Appalachian Festival, the block party will fill downtown streets on Saturday, August 24 from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. The event will offer a variety of food, entertainment & fun for all. Restaurants, organizations and vendors are invited to set up booths along Main, Heber & Neville Streets selling their specialties to the community. Interested vendors need to register with Beckley Events by August 8; call 304-256-1776 or visit the City’s website to download a form. Food vendors must follow Health Department rules and have a food handlers’ card. Celebrity judges will vote for their favorites in individual categories including best appetizer, entree’, sandwich, dessert, and most attractive booth. The public can vote for the Peoples’ Choice Booth. This event was formerly known as Taste of Beckley; now as a block party, non-food booths, artists and pop-ups shops are invited to set-up booths.
Entertainment will feature the New River Jazz Band performing at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street., Shane Ingram on Neville Street at 6:00 pm, and the Lilly Mountaineers at 7:00 p.m. near the intersection of Fayette & Main Streets. Bailey Spurlock and Major Paradigm will perform at Word Park. A Kids Zone area will be offered by the Beckley Events Youth Council and Faith Community Church. The annual Oreo stacking contest by Southern Communications will also take place between 6:30 & 7:00 pm on Main Street.
Upcoming events: Beckley Events’ committee is accepting applications for booth spaces and parade entries during the Kids Classic Festival Street Fair on September 7. The street fair will be from 10am to 2pm, and parade at 11 am. A variety of activities are being planned around the community during the week-long festival.
The committee will begin accepting registrations for Chili Night on August 9 until September 14. Up to 50 chili vendors may register, but only 20 non-chili vendors will be accepted (10 non-chili food vendors and 10 non-food vendors). Chili Night will be held on October 5 from 5-8:30 pm.
