The Beckley Human Rights Commission encourages mutual respect among all groups within the City. The provision of equal opportunity in areas of employment, places of public accommodations (any establishment or person which offers its goods or services to the general public), and housing is the public policy of the City of Beckley. Because the denial of these rights for discriminatory reasons is contrary to the principles of a free society, the Beckley Human Rights Commission was created by the City of Beckley Common Council to prevent such instances.
The Beckley Human Rights Ordinance prohibits discrimination in employment and in places of public accommodations based on race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age (40 or above), blindness, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. In addition, discrimination in housing because of familial status is forbidden.
If you believe you have experienced discrimination, contact the Beckley Human Rights Commission.
Meeting Times: First Wednesday each month at 5:15.
