Beckley’s 31st Annual Friday in the Park series will continue in July and August. The concert series is held weekly from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., weather permitting, at Word Park on Neville Street. Food vendors offer lunch items for sale and community organizations provide information during the event. The July music schedule includes:
July 8 – The Switch (a rock band comprised of youth from Wyoming County – They won the Battle of the Bands at the Charleston Regatta last week); 12:45 – Theatre WV (Rocket Boys Musical preview)
July 15 – 11:30 – Patricia Smith (gospel); 12:20 – Mia Bailey (gospel, Miss Beckley Kids Classic)
July 22 –As part of BEX Arts Week, musicians from the Beckley Art Center and The Raleigh Theatre’s Open Mic series will be featured, along with a couple of BEX pop-up art booths, during lunch at the park. BEX will also present their Young Musicians Showcase at Word Park beginning at 6 pm.
July 29 – Dance Day: 11:30 – Mercer County Senior Line Dancers; 11:55 – Raleigh County Commission on Aging line dancers; 12:20 – Just for Fun Line Dancers; 12:45 – Theater WV (Wizard of Oz preview)
Other July events to note:
The Rotary Club, Beckley Welcome Center and Beckley Police Department will host a Bicycle Safety Event on the McManus Trail by the Welcome Center on July 9 from 11 am – noon.
The July Sunset / Full Moon Group Walk and Bike Ride on the McManus Trail will happen on July 12, meeting at the Art Park lot on 3rd Ave at 8 pm.
The BEX Arts Week committee will offer numerous creative activities around the community from July 15-23. Check out their exciting schedule at bexwv.com or on Facebook.
The How Great Thou Art Theatre Group will present their 2022 Motown Show at The Raleigh Playhouse & Theatre July 15-17.
The Farmers Market at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway Plaza plans to open around July 18. Market vendors can set up on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. For more information, contact the WVU Extension office 304-255-9321.
Also in July, Beckley Events’ committee (with Shade Tree Car Club) will host the City’s annual Summer Car & Bike Show on July 30 from 4-8 pm at Word Park and along downtown streets. Live music, vendors, specialty trophies, games, and a costume contest will be included in the festivities.
Then in August, the Friday in the Park schedule includes:
August 5 – Lady D (blues, pop)
August 12 – How Great Thou Art Theatre Group (Motown)
August 19 – Chris Oxley Quartet (jazz)
August 26 – Appalachian Festival – Lost Cannon Bluegrass, followed by Shane Ingram
Other events being planned by the events committee include a WVU Tech Student Welcome Event (August 16), the Appalachian Festival Street Fair (August 27), Kids Classic Festival (September 5-10) and Chili Night (October 1).
The Beckley Exhibition Mine will host the annual Honey Festival with the Raleigh County Beekeepers Association on August 20.
Beckley Events’ committee is also assisting the Raleigh County Prevention Coalition with their Another Chance Art Market being planned for the afternoon of August 6 at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway.
Plus, the community can look forward to the opening of the Fruits of Labor Café on Neville Street in August.
