Last Saturday, Shade Tree Car Club, Smooth Impressions Car Club and Beckley Events offered a Neighborhood Car Cruise around Bowling Addition. The first cruise was a success with 80 vehicles participating. Car owners stayed in their vehicles at line-up, and then, they cruised around the neighborhood as the residents enjoyed watching from their porches, so social distancing was followed. “Car owners have been missing attending car shows, so the cruises give them a way to show off their rides, and it gives neighborhood residents something to look forward to watching. Many people thanked us for offering the cruises last week and asked us to continue offering them, says Jill Moorefield of Beckley Events. So, the organizations are planning another neighborhood cruise this Saturday, May 9 – this one will be around the McLean Addition and Harper Road, and then Robert C. Byrd Drive – weather-permitting (no snow or rain during the afternoon).
Interested car owners who wish to participate can line-up between 4:00 and 4:30 pm at Cross Point Church on Crescent Road (off of Harper Road between BB&T and CVS) – the church is behind BB&T. From the parking lot at the church, the cruise will turn right onto Crescent Road, and follow past Crescent Elementary School, then turn left on Parkwood, right on Lambert, left on Witherspoon, right on Davis which circles around to McTaggart and Witherspoon; then, make a right onto Northwestern and follow it to Harper Road. Take a right onto Harper Road and follow to Robert C. Byrd Drive. The cruise can end with a drive along Robert C. Byrd Drive – formerly known as Valley Drive, some of the car club members enjoy cruising and reminiscing along this the strip of road. The drivers must stop at all red traffic lights, so the cruise will probably get separated. An additional, optional drive afterward may include circling a few streets around the Maxwell Hill community. Route directions are distributed at the cruise line-up location.
On May 16, a county neighborhood cruise is being planned to begin in Ghent and follow Route 19 thru Shady Springs and Daniels, then go by Little Beaver State Park, and circle The Oaks neighborhood. Then, the cruise will head to Grandview so that the cruisers can view rhododendrons in bloom, weather-permitting.
